Over the last several years, we’ve learned the hard way that disinformation, when combined with the power and reach of social media, can radicalize, divide, and destabilize communities -- and even entire countries. In this episode, Hillary talks with social media and technology expert Tristan Harris about how we got here, and what we need to do to mitigate the influence of Big Tech on our democracy. She also speaks with award-winning Filipino-American journalist Maria Ressa about why the Philippines’ shift away from democracy and toward authoritarianism should serve as a warning to us all.

Tristan Harris spent three years as a Google Design Ethicist developing a framework for how technology should “ethically” steer the thoughts and actions of billions of people from screens. A featured subject in the Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma, Tristan is now co-founder & president of the Center for Humane Technology, whose mission is to reverse “human downgrading” and re-align technology with humanity. He co-hosts the Center for Humane Technology's Your Undivided Attention podcast with co-founder Aza Raskin.

For her courage and work on disinformation and “fake news,” Maria Ressa was named TIME Magazine’s 2018 Person of the Year, and has also been named one of TIME’s Most Influential Women of the Century. A journalist in Asia for nearly 35 years, Maria co-founded Rappler, the top digital-only news site in the Philippines. Maria has endured constant political harassment and arrests by the Duterte government, forced to post bail eight times to stay free. In June of 2020, Maria was found guilty of Cyber Libel charges which includes a sentence of up to six years in prison. Maria is profiled in Frontline’s A Thousand Cuts, directed by Ramona Diaz, and now streaming online on pbs.org/frontline and YouTube. Hillary opens this season of You and Me Both with something we could all use right about now: hope. Joining her is Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman, who inspired so many people with her stirring poem, The Hill We Climb, on Inauguration Day. Amanda talks with Hillary about what it means to tell the story of America, her earliest poems, and how her relationship with her twin sister shaped her language. Together, they strategize about Amanda’s 2036 presidential campaign.

Amanda Gorman is the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate. She recently performed at President Biden's Inauguration and the Super Bowl LV. The special edition of her inaugural poem, The Hill We Climb, is available in March. Her debut picture book, Change Sings, and first poetry collection, The Hill We Climb and Other Poems, will be out this September.

In this episode, Hillary sits down with three fellow book-lovers: mystery novelist (and friend) Louise Penny; return guest Stacey Abrams in her capacity as romance writer (!); and Marley Dias, the 15-year-old founder of the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign. 

Louise Penny is an award-winning and bestselling author. The latest installment in her Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series, All the Devils Are Here, was published earlier this year.

Stacey Abrams was the 2018 Democratic nominee for Governor of Georgia and previously served as the minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives. Marley Dias is the 15-year old founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign, which collects and donates books featuring Black female protagonists to counter the lack of diversity in children’s literature. She is also the author of Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You!, and the host and producer of the Netflix series Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices.

The recent spike in Americans suffering from anxiety and depression makes evident that COVID-19 has impacted our health in more ways than one. In this episode, Hillary talks with three people who have spoken openly about their own mental health struggles: Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald, veterans advocate Jason Kander, and author Allie Brosh.

Audra McDonald is a singer and actor who has won a record-breaking six Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, and an Emmy. Onstage, she’s performed in numerous plays, musicals, and operas, including Carousel, Ragtime, and Porgy & Bess. On TV, she portrayed Dr. Naomi Bennett on the medical drama Private Practice, and in 2018, she joined the cast of the CBS All Access’ The Good Fight. Her latest solo album is Sing Happy.

Jason Kander is a veterans advocate and a former Army Captain who served in Afghanistan. He was elected to the Missouri state legislature in 2008 and as Missouri Secretary of State in 2012. Jason is the founder of Let America Vote, an organization that fights to protect voting rights; the national expansion director for the Veterans Community Project; and co-host of the political podcast Majority 54. His memoir, Outside the Wire: Ten Lessons I’ve Learned in Everyday Courage, was a bestseller.

Allie Brosh is a former blogger and the author of the New York Times #1 bestsellers Hyperbole and a Half (2013) and Solutions and Other Problems, published earlier this year.

Then, Hillary chats with Rocco DeFazio, the owner of one of her favorite pizzerias, about how his restaurant has adjusted to the pandemic.

On the heels of announcing new precautions to keep people safe, Governor Gretchen Whitmer joins Hillary to discuss what leadership looks like, how our country can heal from the last four years, and of course, Thanksgiving Day plans.

Gretchen Whitmer is the 48th governor of Michigan since January 2019. Before taking office, she served as the Minority Leader in the Michigan State Senate from 2006 to 2015.

Soledad O’Brien is an award-winning documentarian, journalist, author, and philanthropist, who founded Soledad O’Brien Productions, a multi-platform media production company dedicated to telling empowering and authentic stories on a range of social issues. She anchors and produces the Hearst TV program “Matter of Fact with Soledad O’Brien” and is a correspondent for HBO Real Sports.

How are people who've worked their hearts out in this election feeling as we head into the final hours? In this episode, Hillary finds out with her special co-host, actor and advocate America Ferrera. Mallory Rogers is a 17-year-old student activist and senior at Rome High School in Rome, Georgia. Mallory is serving as a poll worker this election.

Justin Blackman is an 18-year-old based in North Carolina who is voting for the first time in a presidential election. When he was 16, he garnered national attention for tweeting a video of himself after realizing he was the only student at his school to participate in the 2018 national school walkout against gun violence.

Kal Penn is an actor, comedian, and activist. He’s known for his roles in the cult-classic comedy trilogy Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, and on the TV show House. He’s also been involved in politics as President Obama’s former Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. Kal recently encouraged people to get out and vote through the Freeform show Kal Penn Approves This Message.  

Emmy Ruiz is a community organizer and political consultant who first got involved in politics as a field organizer in Nevada for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign. She is currently a partner at NEWCO Strategies, a strategic political consulting firm with offices in Austin, Texas, and Washington, DC. 

Brandon Thomas is a candidate for the seat representing District 49 in the Tennessee State House of Representatives. If elected, he will be the first openly gay member of the Tennessee General Assembly and the first Black representative for his county.

Zerlina Maxwell is a political analyst, writer, TV host, and activist who served as the director of progressive media for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. She wrote The End of White Politics: How to Heal Our Liberal Divide, and serves as the host of the new Peacock series, Zerlina, and the radio show, Signal Boost, for SiriusXM. 

Glennon Doyle is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Untamed, which has sold over one million copies. She is also the author of Love Warrior and Carry On, Warrior. Glennon is the founder and president of Together Rising, an all-women led nonprofit organization that has revolutionized grassroots philanthropy. She lives in Florida with her wife, World Cup soccer champion Abby Wambach, and three children.
