16m · Published 13 Sep 07:00

Couch Talks is the bonus episode of You Need Therapy where Kat answers questions that listeners send to [email protected]. Kat brings Julia Langner (@theselfcompassioncounselor) on the podcast this week to talk about a recent instagram post she made that addressed one of the biggest misconceptions of suicide: That talking about it increases the likelihood of it happening. It is surprisingly the opposite! Listen to this episode to hear some tips about how you can start these conversations and more about why they are so crucial to have within our communities right now!

The Family Scapegoat aka The Truth Teller

25m · Published 28 Aug 07:00

Have you ever had a consequence thrown at you for refusing to turn a blind eye?Or have you ever been punished for telling a secret that you never should have been asked to keep? If you answered yes to either of these questions you may have experienced being "scapegoated". This can happen when someone tries to bring order to a dysfunctional system. Doing so can throw off the sense of "order" within that system (even thought it's disordered). Having a scapegoat is a form of protection for that system. It allows them to push blame onto someone else so they can create the delusion that the system is healthier than it is. In this episode, we explore what that can look and feel like and what to do if you find yourself getting the shaft for telling the truth.

From Denial to an Open Book: A Story of Recovery with Mathias John

1h 3m · Published 14 Aug 07:00

Today we are rounding out our 3 part series on addiction. We started talking about it from a clinical/therapist perspective, then moved to the perspective of a loved one, and now we have a human who has actually walked through the throes of addiction themselves here to share part of their own story.

Mathias John is someone I met years ago through his wife–who actually happens to be a therapist. Through his recovery journey he decided to offer the community something that he wished he had, a story he could relate to; a story about a high functioning addict who hid from himself and others really well. So, he took his ACTUAL PERSONAL JOURNALS and created a book out of them. Yep. He is welcoming us into his real mind- his most personal thoughts- and sharing what it was like for him to move through his life as someone struggling with addiction and someone working towards recovery.

AND to top it off, he actually writes this book alongside his own therapist, Ashley Boyd.

In our conversation we talk about a lot. What I hope you hear in this is something we can all relate to, a story about someone who tried their hardest to run from the truth and eventually found out that telling the truth would set them free.  AND a story about that being really freaking hard and possible at the same time.

Mathias’ book comes out September 14th and you can learn more about it HERE!
