Everyone knows that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Virtually no family has escaped being impacted by breast cancer. There are many types of breast cancer and an alarming number of young women are afflicted with breast cancer. The subject of young women and breast cancer does not receive nearly enough attention and much more public awareness and education are needed. Accordingly, on this episode of “Battling and Beating Cancer” we focus on young women with breast cancer. One of the many things that breast cancer – and other cancers – and cancer treatments can take from young women is the ability to have children. We will address the important subjects of infertility and preserving the ability of cancer patients to become mothers with Mindy Berkson, a renowned fertility consultant and founder of Chicago-based Lotus Blossom Consulting. We also will be joined by Alice Crisci, a remarkably woman who took her experience with breast cancer and turned it into a blessing for many other woman by helping them become mothers through her non-profit organization Fertile Action. The International Lymphoma Epidemiology Consortium (InterLymph)is an international group of leading medical investigators engaged in research on the epidemiology (causation) of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. One of the most common questions we hear is “what causes lymphoma” or “what causes cancer.” Curiosity may kill a cat, but a better understanding of “what causes cancer” will save untold lives through prevention and better treatments. Further, collaboration among leading researchers across the globe benefits all of us by accelerating the advancement of medical knowledge and more effective treatments.

Many patients feel that, by participating in clinical trials they will be used as Guinea pigs. The reality is that, in today's clinical trials, patients are well- monitored and generally receive the standard of care for their disease as well as an additional agent or agents that have demonstrated some degree of effectiveness. Many people are alive today because they participated in clinical trials. Dr. Julie Vose, Chief of the Division of Hematology Oncology and Professor of Medicine, University of Nebraska Medical Center, joins Charlene and Scott and helps to separate the fact from the fiction regarding clinical trials. We also will be joined by Greg Dafoe, a lymphoma survivor and moderator of the NHL Cyberfamily Support Group. Greg will discuss his participation in a clinical trial.
